Free Construction Takeoff Software in 2026

Free and low-cost takeoff software compared for residential work: what's actually free, what each measures, and their limits.

Updated · FloorFigures

Short answer

Only a few takeoff tools are free with no time limit: FloorFigures (no limits; residential rooms, flooring, paint, drywall), STACK's Free plan (1 active project a month, 50 measurements per project) and the free version of PDF-XChange Editor (distance, perimeter and area, Windows). Bluebeam, PlanSwift, zzTakeoff and Easy Takeoffs offer 14-day free trials; after that, prices run from $39 a month (Easy Takeoffs) to $3,000 a year (PlanSwift Core).

"Free takeoff software" usually means one of three things, and the difference matters once you have a bid due. Fully free tools have no time limit and no paywall. Free plans are free forever but capped (projects, pages or measurements). Free trials give you the paid product for a week or two, then stop. Here's which is which, checked on each vendor's own site on October 12, 2026.

Fully free takeoff tools

FloorFigures (ours)

FloorFigures is a free, browser-based tool for residential takeoffs from a floor plan: PDF, image or a phone photo of a printed plan. On PDFs, clicks snap to the drawing's own vector lines and the scale is read from printed dimensions. Click inside a room (or press A for all of them) and you get floor area, perimeter, wall area less openings, ceiling, flooring with waste and boxes, paint gallons, drywall sheets and baseboard, priced from your own list and exported to CSV, PDF or DXF. It's free with no limits and plans never leave your device. The trade-offs: no count tool for fixtures or symbols, no cloud sync or sharing between devices, no text reading on images (automatic scale and room names work on PDFs only), and no integrations with estimating software beyond file exports.

PDF-XChange Editor (free version)

PDF-XChange Editor is a Windows PDF editor whose free version includes the Distance, Perimeter and Area tools and exporting measurements to a CSV file; the vendor's feature list marks all four as free. You calibrate the scale yourself and trace each measurement. It's a general PDF tool, so there are no assemblies, waste factors or material quantities: you take the numbers into a spreadsheet. The vendor says about 70% of features are unrestricted in the free download, so some other editing features are paid.

Adobe Acrobat Reader and Foxit PDF Reader

Both free readers include distance, perimeter and area tools, but both vendors' help pages say Reader users get them only if the PDF's creator enabled measuring. Many plan sets aren't set up that way, so the tools may simply be missing. Where they work, set the scale ratio first and check it against a printed dimension. Paid Acrobat Pro ($19.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly) removes the restriction.

Free plans with limits

STACK Free

STACK is cloud takeoff and estimating software, and its Free plan is $0 "forever": you start with 7 days of Pro, then keep 1 active project a month, up to 300 plan pages, 50 measurements per project, plan viewing and markup, and the core takeoff tools. That's enough for an occasional small bid, which is how STACK describes it. Unlimited projects and measurements, assemblies and AI takeoff need Premium ($299 per user per month, billed annually) or Pro ($349), on 12-month terms.

Free trials

Bluebeam Revu

Bluebeam offers a 14-day trial of its Max plan with no credit card. Paid plans are $260 (Basics, length and area only), $330 (Core, adds perimeter, count, angle and volume), $440 (Complete, adds Quantity Link with Excel) and $590 (Max, an introductory price) per user per year. It runs on Windows desktop, with Bluebeam on web and mobile.

PlanSwift

PlanSwift's 14-day trial includes every feature, needs no card, and nothing happens automatically when it ends. After that it's $2,000 (Essential) or $3,000 (Core) per seat per year. It measures areas, lengths and counts on PDF, CAD and image files with assemblies for your trade, and runs on Windows only.

zzTakeoff

zzTakeoff is cloud takeoff software with a 14-day free trial. The Pro plan, which has the takeoff tools, is $49.99 per user per month or $549.89 per user per year; the $19.99 Collaborator plan is annotation only, with no takeoff tools. It measures areas, lengths and counts, with templates, assemblies and real-time collaboration.

Easy Takeoffs

Easy Takeoffs runs in the browser on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebooks, and on tablets and phones. The 14-day trial needs no card; after that it's $39 a month or $399 a year. It measures lengths, areas, counts and angles, reads scale notes on upload, and includes material templates with waste factors and cloud storage.

Kreo

Kreo is cloud takeoff software priced per user per month, billed annually: Lite $35, Plus $70 and Pro $175, with AI tools such as Auto Measure on Pro. Its plans show a 7-day free trial, and its FAQ says trial availability is shown at checkout based on your account. Kreo also offers a 7-day money-back guarantee after the first payment.

Togal.AI

Togal.AI is an AI takeoff tool that, in Togal's words, "automatically detects, measures, and compares directly from your drawings." Its pricing page lists Growth at $299 per user per month, billed yearly, and custom Business pricing for 4 or more users. We didn't find a free plan or free trial on its site; the sign-up path is a demo.

Which free option fits residential work?

  • Flooring, paint and drywall from the customer's plan: FloorFigures gives per-room quantities free. See FloorFigures for contractors and how to do a material takeoff.
  • An occasional bid that needs counts: STACK's Free plan, within its 1 project a month and 50 measurements.
  • A few lengths and areas on a PDF: FloorFigures, or the free PDF-XChange Editor on Windows.
  • Daily estimating across trades: trial two or three paid tools on a job you've already bid, and compare the quantities.

Whatever you use, check the scale on every sheet before you measure. A PDF printed or saved to fit a page no longer matches its scale note; see how to scale a PDF drawing.

How we chose

We included the takeoff tools residential contractors most often ask about, plus the free PDF tools people try first. Every "free" claim, price and limit comes from the vendor's own site, read on October 12, 2026; where a site didn't state something, we say so or write "see vendor site". We didn't run head-to-head accuracy tests of other vendors' tools, so there are no ratings, and the order within each section isn't a ranking. FloorFigures is our product; it's listed first, with what it doesn't do.

Questions

Is there free takeoff software?
Yes, a few tools are free with no time limit. FloorFigures is fully free, with no account or limits, and measures residential rooms for flooring, paint, drywall and baseboard. STACK has a Free plan limited to 1 active project a month and 50 measurements per project. The free version of PDF-XChange Editor (Windows) has distance, perimeter and area tools. Most dedicated takeoff products, including Bluebeam, PlanSwift, zzTakeoff and Easy Takeoffs, offer a 14-day free trial instead.
Is STACK takeoff software free?
STACK has a Free plan at $0 that starts with 7 days of Pro features. After that it allows 1 active project per month, up to 300 plan pages, 50 measurements per project and the core takeoff tools. Unlimited projects and measurements need Premium, listed at $299 per user per month billed annually, or Pro at $349.
Do Bluebeam and PlanSwift have free versions?
No, both offer free trials rather than free versions. Bluebeam's 14-day trial gives full access to its Max plan with no credit card; paid plans run $260 to $590 per user per year. PlanSwift's 14-day trial needs no card and doesn't charge you when it ends; paid plans are $2,000 or $3,000 per seat per year, and it runs on Windows only.
Can I do a takeoff in Adobe Acrobat Reader for free?
Only on some files. Adobe Acrobat Reader has distance, perimeter and area tools, but Adobe says Reader users get them only if the PDF's creator enabled measuring. Foxit's Reader help says the same about its free reader. To measure any PDF plan for free, use FloorFigures in the browser or the free version of PDF-XChange Editor on Windows.
What is the best free takeoff software for residential contractors?
For room-by-room residential quantities, FloorFigures is free with no limits: it snaps to the PDF's lines, reads the scale from printed dimensions, finds the rooms and gives floor area, perimeter, wall area less openings, flooring with waste and boxes, paint gallons, drywall sheets and baseboard per room. It has no count tool, so if you need to count fixtures or symbols, STACK's Free plan covers 1 active project a month.

Measure your own plan.

Open a PDF, image or photo of the plan. FloorFigures finds the scale and the rooms and does the math. $10 once, for life, and nothing is uploaded.
