19boxes
456 sq ft in those boxes
- Floor area
- 408.0 sq ft
- Waste (10%)
- 40.8 sq ft
- Area with waste
- 448.8 sq ft
Boxes are rounded up. Keep a spare box or two from the same lot for future repairs.
How it's calculated
Boxes of LVP = floor area × 1.10 (10% waste for a straight lay) ÷ sq ft per box, rounded up. For 408 sq ft of rooms: 408 × 1.10 = 448.8 sq ft, and at 24 sq ft per carton that's 18.7, so buy 19 boxes.
Using the vinyl plank calculator
Add each room where the planks will go, including closets the floor runs into, and pick the layout. Then replace the 24 sq ft default with the coverage printed on your carton. Vinyl plank cartons commonly cover about 17–30 sq ft, so the default is only a starting point: check the label. Round the result up, and buy every carton from the same lot.
How box size changes the count
The same 408 sq ft of rooms, with 10% waste (448.8 sq ft), needs a different number of cartons depending on the product:
| Coverage per box | 448.8 ÷ coverage | Boxes to buy |
|---|---|---|
| 17 sq ft | 26.4 | 27 |
| 20 sq ft | 22.4 | 23 |
| 24 sq ft | 18.7 | 19 |
| 28 sq ft | 16.0 | 17 |
| 30 sq ft | 15.0 | 15 |
That's a spread of 12 boxes for the same floor, which is why comparing products on price per carton is misleading. Compare the price per square foot instead.
What makes vinyl plank waste go up
- Long planks and stagger rules. Manufacturers set a minimum distance between end joints in neighboring rows. Offcuts shorter than that can't start the next row, so they become waste.
- Room shape. Closets, angled walls, hearths and many doorways mean more cuts. Allow 12–15% for chopped-up floor plans.
- Pattern. Herringbone vinyl uses short planks with angled cuts at every edge: plan on 15–20%.
- Mixing cartons. Print and color vary between lots and between boards in a box. Installers often open several cartons at once and mix them, and set aside boards that don't look right.
Click-lock, glue-down and the expansion gap
Most DIY vinyl plank is click-lock: the planks lock together and float over the subfloor without fasteners. A floating floor moves slightly with temperature, so it needs a small gap at every wall and fixed object, hidden by baseboard or quarter round, and sometimes a transition strip in long runs or wide doorways. The manufacturer sets the gap size and run limits. Glue-down (dry-back) vinyl is bonded to the subfloor, so you also buy adhesive by the trowel coverage printed on the pail.

Questions
- How many square feet are in a box of LVP?
- It varies by product, so check the label. Cartons of luxury vinyl plank commonly cover about 17–30 square feet, depending on plank width, length and thickness. Two products that look alike can differ by several square feet per box, which changes how many boxes you need.
- How much extra LVP should I buy?
- About 10% extra for planks laid straight in ordinary rooms, more for rooms with many corners, closets or doorways, and 15–20% for herringbone or diagonal layouts. Long planks leave long offcuts, and those only get reused if they're long enough to meet the manufacturer's end-joint stagger.
- How many boxes of vinyl plank do I need for 1,000 square feet?
- With 10% waste you need 1,100 square feet. At 24 square feet per box that's 45.8, so buy 46 boxes. At 20 square feet per box it's exactly 55 boxes. Always divide by the coverage on your own carton and round up.
- Does vinyl plank flooring need an expansion gap?
- Floating click-lock vinyl plank usually does: a small gap at walls, cabinets and other fixed objects, covered by baseboard or quarter round. The width and any limits on long runs without a transition are set by the manufacturer, so follow the installation guide for your product.
- Do I need underlayment for LVP?
- Many vinyl planks have a pad attached, and those generally don't need another one. Some manufacturers say a second pad can weaken the locking joints and affect the warranty. Planks without a pad, and some subfloors such as concrete, may need the underlayment or vapor barrier the manufacturer specifies.
